Probiotics are living microorganisms that have many benefits for the body.
It is estimated that 100 trillion microorganisms in more than 500 different species live in each healthy and normal gut. These microorganisms (or microflora) do not cause our disease in general, but most of them are beneficial. Intestinal bacteria control pathogens (harmful microorganisms), aid digestion and absorption of nutrients, and help the immune system function. Many of the microorganisms in probiotic products are the same microorganisms that live naturally in our bodies and kill pathogenic cells or produce vitamins.
Some gastroenterologists recommend specialized probiotic supplements for gastrointestinal disorders for which common medications are frustrating, such as irritable bowel syndrome. Since the mid-1990s, clinical studies have shown that probiotic therapy can help treat several gastrointestinal diseases, delay the development of allergies in children, and prevent and treat vaginal and urinary tract infections in women.
Not all probiotics are the same. Different strains of microbes (bacteria and yeasts) have different effects. For example, one strain may fight disease-causing organisms in the oral cavity and does not need to survive through the gut. Each strain has its own function and mechanism and is designed and produced to treat a specific disease or a specific group of diseases.
The potential benefits of specialized probiotic supplements in the treatment or prevention of the following diseases have been repeatedly demonstrated by extensive research by leading health and medical researchers over the past few decades:
- Infectious diarrhea of viral, bacterial and parasitic origin
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Ulcerative colitis
- Antibiotic-induced diarrhea
- Travel diarrhea
- Urinary and vaginal health
- Crohn's disease
- Gastrointestinal ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori
- Clostridium difficile infectious disease
